Attack the Block Showing This Month?
According to Variety:
StudioCanal’s Harold Van Lier points to a new generation of extremely well-informed and very demanding filmgoers targeted by pics like his company’s co-production “Attack the Block,” a kids-in-the-projects vs. aliens concept, which will unspool in Berlin.
I’m not sure what exactly “unspool in Berlin” means (and the full article is quite unclear) but it probably means the Berlin International Film Festival, which takes place between 10th and 20th of this month.
Attack the Block is now rumoured for a May release, but showing it off at Berlin may result in it being bought up by a film distribution company which will market it and distribute it in time for May.
Not Really News but Maybe Interesting?
This doesn’t really count as news, but I’ve just found out that Double Negative are doing the effects on Attack the Block, which they’re currently working on, along with other projects including Paul, Harry Potter, and Captain America.
So the effects in this film are going to be top class!
Empire and Little White Lies Magazines
As already mentioned in the newspost below, Empire Magazine’s January issue has a two page spread devoted to Attack the Block. I’m usually against posting scans from magazines you can buy, BUT there is a blurry photograph that gives you an idea of the spread without giving you any delicious text. You might say that I am advertising the magazine for people to buy! And it was posted by Leeon Jones who is an actor in the film. (Source: Auntie_Nubbins)
In other news you probably already know about, a movie magazine called Little White Lies is featuring Attack the Block in their February issue, and is holding a contest for people to create DIY spacecraft, with the best photos to be featured in the mag. The February issue will have Attack the Block on the cover, and will be available to buy for £4, of view online for free in March.
Happy weekend!
A Few Small Points
- The blog name is not as original or brilliant as I first thought. For a start, the excellent Auntie_Nubbins had already thought of the idea, and secondly, I now keep thinking that the film is called Attack the Blog rather than Attack the Block. As a result of this confusion I have also forgotten my name and where I live. I am currently writing this in an internet cafe. Next point:
- Basement Jaxx have been confirmed as the soundtrack scorers, by this tweet from collaborator Edgar Wright: “Heard some of Basement Jaxx’s score for Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block yesterday. Still humming it today. #GoodStuff.” Basement Jaxx are a highly aclaimed electro-music duo that should fit perfectly with the British sci-fi film.
- Speaking of Edgar Wright, he recently did a radio show which Joe Cornish came on, mentioning Attack the Block as well as some other things. The clip is courtesy of Auntie_Nubbins.
- According to people on the Adam and Joe forums, there is a two-page spread of Attack the Block in this month’s Empire Magazine with a photo of the young cast dragging an alien carcus behind them. Exciting!
Welcome to the Blog
Dear Internet,
There’s already a lot of great Adam and Joe fan-sites, and many of them cover news about Joe Cornish’s directing debut film Attack the Block. However, as far as I know, there are no fan sites dedicated to that film alone, so I decided to set one up.
Hopefully this will become an easy place for people to get all the updates about the film. Bookmark it! Subscribe to the RSS! Leave comments and let me know if I’ve missed some nugget of news (however small)!
The most important part of a web-site is, of course, the name — and frankly I think I should win a Nobel Prize in Literature for this one. The film is called Attack the Block — so what should the unofficial fan blog be called? Well, Attack the Blog of course! It’s certainly better than my first idea for a name, which was “The Most Rare and Excellente Historie of ye Renownede Mr Cornishe and His Moste Splendide Cinematographicale Productione, ‘Attacke ye Blocke,’ Whereine is Containede Maneey Pleasante Passages to be Reade or Sunge.’ That title scored massive points amongst my 18th century readership but fell flat when pitched to living human beings, which is, I suppose, my primary audience.
The next post will be better than this one, I promise!
